Portuguese referee Pedro Proença, who gave Dutch player Arjen Robben a penalty that helped Holland beat Mexico and reach the 2014 World Cup quarter-finals, announced his retirement from professional soccer.

Mexico fans showed their dissatisfaction with Robben’s dive with the hashtag, #NoEraPenal (it wasn't a penalty) and piñatas with the player's image soon followed.

After a 16-year career, Proença, born in Lisbon in 1970, justified his retirement saying that his profession is a  "very physically demanding activity" and that he had already achieved his "goals and objectives".

He announced his decision at the headquarters of the Portuguese Football Federation in Lisbon.

Since 1998 he refereed 370 matches, 101 of them international.
