Portuguese referee Pedro Proença, who gave Dutch player Arjen Robben a penalty that helped Holland beat Mexico and reach the 2014 World Cup quarter-finals, announced his retirement from professional soccer.
Mexico fans showed their dissatisfaction
with Robbens dive with the
hashtag, #NoEraPenal (it wasn't a penalty) and piñatas with the player's image soon followed.
After a 16-year career, Proença, born in Lisbon in 1970, justified his retirement saying that his profession is a "very physically demanding activity" and that he had already achieved his "goals and objectives".
