Rogelio González Pizaña, known as 'El Kelín', founder of Los Zetas and lieutenant of the Gulf Cartel, was released in August after he was acquitted of organized crime and homicide charges.

Rogelio González Pizaña, known as "El Kelín" or "Z-2", former lieutenant of the Gulf Cartel and founder of Los Zetas, was released from the Almoloya de Juárez prison on August 30, 2014 after being acquitted of organized crime and attempted murder charges, sources of the Ministry of the Interior said.

A court in Guadalajara, Jalisco, changed the 16 year sentence given to him in January 2014 by another court in Toluca, State of Mexico. The new sentence was 6 years and 3 days in prison and a 101-day fine, a sentence that 'The Kelin' had already served because he was imprisoned in October 2004.

González was released on August 30 because the court only found evidence for the crimes of possession of firearms and cartridges for the exclusive use of the Army, the Navy and the Air Force.

The "stealth" release of Rogelio González Pizaña, also known as Rogelio Pizaña González and Rogelio González Garza, resembles the release of drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero on August 9, 2013, after spending over 28 years in prison.

The first nickname González had was "The Lord of the Beach', because he controlled the airstrip known as "Los Cuervos", located near Baghdad beach in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, where shipments were unloaded and put in speedboats to be sent to the United States, according to reports of the Mexican government

Besides being faithful to Osiel Cárdenas Guillén, held in the United States since 2007, the "Z-2" created a safety net in Matamoros and Reynosa that allowed him to operate without any restrictions and to escape police.
