José Manuel Mireles, former spokesman of self-defense forces of Michoacán, admitted that he is dating an 18-year-old girl since November 2013.

They met because her parents took her to Mireles as a doctor after she engaged in a quarrel with two participants of a beauty contest.

The father of the girl, a Mexican-American citizen, wants to take her with him to the United States. 

Mireles, 55, is in the process of divorcing from Ana Valencia after 27 years of marriage during which they had three daughters and two sons.

His personal life is not the only thing under question. Today, Mireles said in a radio interview that he does not have to defend himself of anything regarding the homicide of five people in Lázaro Cárdenas.

Recently, one of the leaders of self-defense forces known as "El Comandante 5" (Commander 5) said that there were photos of Mireles holding the head of a dead person.

However, Mireles explained that he drove to the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas after he heard about the attack, and that an investigator in the area asked him to hold the head of one of the corpses that were found in Playa Azul.  

On Friday Alfredo Castillo, Commissioner for the Security and Integral Development of Michoacán, said that the photos could not be taken as evidence against Mireles and that the investigation continues.
