A federal judge denied the appeal of Jose de Jesus Mendez Vargas, "El Chango Mendez", a leader of the Michoacan Family Cartel who wanted to prevent his extradition to the U.S., making a very clear possibility his delivery to that country.
The First Collegiate Court in Civil Matters of the First Circuit of Mexico City informed that it denied the appeal, requesting protection against the decision of the Federal Government to extradite the supposed drug dealer, as requested by the U.S.
According to the ruling, the judge “rejected that the current circumstances of the complainant, currently under preventive prison during the process he is facing before a federal judge, would preclude his extradition, because the United States requested him in order to be judged for different criminal offenses”.
"El Chango Mendez" is requested by the Federal Attorney of the Southern District in New York, for criminal conspiracy to distribute cocaine and methamphetamine, between 2006 and 2011, in the U.S. territory.
“In Mexico he is accused, in his role as leader of the already defined organization, from 2005 to June 21, 2001, when he was arrested, of distributing and selling drugs, specifically in the states of Michoacan, Queretaro and Guerrero, bribing the authorities, who provided him with protection, (and) kidnapping and extorting in order to get resources for his organization”, said the Mexican court.
Because of the different nature of the charges against him in both countries, there is no reason not to extradite him to be judged by the U.S. authorities, added the court.
