One of the leaders of the Gulf Cartel, Jesus Alejandro Leal Flores, known as "Metro 24" or “El Simple", was arrested in Reynosa after a combat with the Mexican army.
At least an officer of the Federal Police died, said the Ministry of Justice of Tamaulipas, while informal sources said that four armed men where killed and two more were wounded in different areas of the city.
The Justice Ministry of Tamaulipas confirmed that the clash began around 4:00 pm in the neighborhoods of Valle Alto and La Cima, but said they were unable to provide more information because it was an action
conducted by federal forces. In the meantime, the federal police in Nuevo Leon used its Twitter account to inform about blockades and disperse clashes near the area where the drug trafficking leader was arrested.
Social network users published pictures of shell casings and blood on the ground after the combats.
The “main battle”, as it was named, was waged near Valle Alto, lasting for about 40 minutes. Other combats were staged in the areas of Aztlan, Aquiles Serdan and Luis Donaldo Colosio, because the criminals
were trying to stop the arrival of reinforcements from the Federal Police, the Army and the Navy.
After his arrest, Leal Flores was taken to a Navy plane that was waiting at the local airport. Other members of the cartel could have been detained also, but there has been no additional information.
Leal Flores, also known as Ramon, was an underling of Armando Gonzalez, “The Hummer”, founder of the Zetas, who were initially the security squad for the Gulf Cartel and later became
their main competitor. When the two organizations broke apart, Jesus Alejandro joined the cartel under the orders of Samuel Flores Borrego, known as "M3", taking the control of vast areas of the city.
