The U.S. government will appoint María Echaveste as its next ambassador
to Mexico, legislative sources said to EL UNIVERSAL.
The daughter of Mexican immigrants has held important positions such as
White House Deputy Chief of Staff during the second Clinton administration.
After
leaving the White House, Echaveste founded the Nueva Vista Group, a strategic and policy consulting group that works with nonprofit
organizations, associations and corporations on such issues as immigration,
health care, telecommunications, labor and finances.
Echaveste, 60, originally from Texas, is an expert and advocate for
immigration reform and is said to be close to Hillary Clinton.
She has a degree in anthropology from Stanford University and a law
degree from Berkeley. After spending part of her childhood in Harlingen, Texas,
her parents, who worked in the field, and her six siblings moved to California.
According to testimony gathered by media such as The New York Times, Echaveste
picked strawberries, cotton and tomatoes as a child.
As an anecdote, some supporters of Echaveste link her image and career
with the fictional character of Linda Vasquez, chief of staff to President
Garret Walker on the Netflix series "House of Cards" starring actor
Kevin Spacey.
