Immigrants fast in front of the White House

Naira Zapata, Jose Valdez and Cynthia Diaz started a hunger strike to protest deportations.

Three migrants protesting near the White House since Saturday announced they would fast to pressure president Barack Obama to halt deportations.

The hunger strike, that the migrants plan to hold indefinitely after lunch on Tuesday, coincides with a 48-hour fast by 100 women from all over the country gathered in Washington, where they will meet legislators and White House officials.

Naira Zapata says she fasts to demand the release of her partner, gardener Aradny Gonzalez, so that he can meet their 8-month-old daughter that was born after he was arrested.

"I want to fast to feel what my husband and other prisoners feel. They can't eat right locked up in there," said Zapata, 19, born in Puebla and who lives in Arizona since 2006.

Jose Valdez and Cynthia Diaz will accompany Zapata in her fast. 

Cynthia Diaz, 18 and born in Arizona, protests for the deportation process against her mother that started on March 16, when she re-entered the United States illegally.

Jose Valdez protests for the release of his son Jaime, 31, an inmate at the Florence Detention Center in Arizona after an appeal to his deportation.

The three activists protest outside the White House since Saturday, when they participated in rallies organized to denounce the deportation of 2 million people under Obama administration.
