Two parents of the missing students of Ayotzinapa appeared before the Human Rights Subcommittee of the European Parliament to request an independent investigation on the disappearance of the 43 youngsters, that were last seen in Iguala on September 26, 2014.
Bernabé Abraján, father of Adán Abraján de la Cruz, and Hilda Legideño Vargas, mother of Jorge Antonio Tizapa Legideño, traveled to Brussels accompanied by María Luisa Aguilar, coordinator of the international area of the Tlachinollan Human Rights Center, and by Stephanie Erin Brewer, coordinator of the international area of the Miguel Agustín Pro Juárez Human Rights Center.
"Mexico's government lied to us right from the beginning. First they said that the students were in a pit and now they tell us that they were burned beyond recognition. The Argentine experts told us that our children are not there. We no longer believe in the government's investigations," said Abraján.
Hilda Legideño also demanded that Ángel Aguirre, former governor of Guerrero, is also investigated as one of the masterminds in this case and in the death of two students at the Mexico City-Acapulco highway in 2011.
"We will keep talking, even if the government tries to intimidate us. We will not accept the bodies of those who are not our children."
Several members of the European Parliament (MEP) proposed devoting part of a million euro fund to search students and clarify the investigations.
Ulrike Lunacek, a member of the Green Party and one of the MEPs that arranged the visit of the parents, said at a press conference that all the chains of command that may have been involved in the disappearance of the students need to be investigated, all the way "from the top".
Moreover Jodi Sebastià, a Spanish member of the European Parliament, said that trade agreements with Mexico should be subject to the observance of human rights.
